Managing the Transition from Monolith to Microservices
While the debate rages on about the wisdom of building monolith-first, the reality is that the majority of projects still start as monoliths. While it sounds great to defer to that magical day when you’ll switch everything to services, successful projects usually find on that day that they have 24×7 workload, paying customers, and a system that isn’t designed for incremental change.
With real-world examples from the internals of CircleCI and other projects, Rob Zuber, CTO at CircleCI will discuss some of the patterns that make it easier to transition away from the monolith, the dangers lurking in premature implementation of services, and early design decisions that have amazing and terrible impacts on scaling when the time comes.
